The Flash recently unveiled a new trailer for ‘Mixed Signals’, the upcoming second episode of the show’s fourth season. And along the way, some fans have spotted a pretty sly Easter egg to Batman.

About six seconds into the trailer, which you can check out here, a control screen for Barry’s new suit can be seen. The screen has plenty of categories, including typical things like comms, temperature control, and flotation. But the screen also contains a pretty unique feature – Babel Control.
Babel appears to be a reference to the ‘Tower of Babel’, a popular Justice League of America storyline that ran from July to October of 2000. In it, Batman is shown keeping a large array of hidden records about his teammates, including how to neutralize them in a fight. Unfortunately, these files get in the hands of R’as al Ghul, who uses them to attack and kill each member of The League.
On the surface, that sounds like a pretty dark thing to allude to on The Flash, especially considering the series’ plans for a more hopeful and upbeat season four. But when you take into account what the function could mean – in an admittedly less-lethal sense – it makes sense.
How Could It Be Used?
The Babel Protocol function could very well be something Barry is able to use in a fight, which would give him hints on how to defeat his foes. But that almost feels too predictable, especially when the show is largely built around the team working around each new problem.
But if the function was something that could be used against Barry – by another Team Flash member with access to Cisco’s tablet – things could certainly get interesting.
The Flash has had a weird history of trying to dampen Barry’s speed, with Ciscoย creating what would eventualy become Captain Cold’s cold gun as a sort of fail-safe against Barry. If Team Flash wanted a way to disable Barry’s speed, without it getting stolen by another supervillain, a function inside his suit seems like the way to do it.
But what could cause Team Flash to use that function against Barry? Well for one thing, Barry is still dealing with the side effects of being stuck inside the Speed Force, and maybe Ciscoย and co. were worried he couldย become dangerous because of it. And of course, there’s the nature of The Thinker, the season’s mind-controlling Big Bad. If The Thinker ended up getting Barry under his control, a function to stop Barry from causing large amounts of harm would be incredibly useful.
