With films under his belt like Sabotage and Fury, David Ayer has a reputation for being an exciting director who’s got a handle on big-budget films. And, as David Ayer joined Suicide Squad as both writer and director from its inception, fans are dying to see the comic adaptation has in store for them.
A fan of the Suicide Squad comics, David Ayer has often spoken openly about the inherent challenges he faced in translating the franchise’s original media to film. In an interview with Total Film Magazine, David spoke about how he approached the adaptation by saying, “You have to be true to the source material, but at the same time, I want to give the characters a real psychology and make them feel of our world. For me the fun is creating the illusion that you can walk down the street and run into Harley Quinn, or see the Joker driving along.”
David Ayer also discussed how the film’s morals and heroic subversions hooked his attention. “With a good guy you automatically like them because they do the right thingโฆBut with bad guys it’s more of a creative challenge โ How do you get an audience to like a villain,” he asked.
The film’s cast has gained attention as talent like Jared Leto has inherited the role of The Joker from the late Heath Ledger while actresses like Margot Robbie and Cara Delevingne will play Harley Quinn and the Enchantress respectively.
While anticipation for the film sits high with fans, the film did experience turbulence earlier this spring when news hit that Suicide Squad was undergoing reshoots. As the news broke following critiques of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘s seriousness, fans speculated if Suicide Squad was being reshot to add more humor into the film. David Ayer, however, refuted the rumor by taking to Twitter to tell fans that the reshoots were normal by writing, “When a studio loves your movie and asks what else you want, go for it!”
As fans grow more excited to see the film, David Ayer’s most recent tweet will only fan their flames of anticipation as DC diehard fans prepare for what could be their favorite movie of the year.
