All-Star Batman writer Scott Snyder, one of the most in-demand names in comics, has a Justice Society of America story he wants to tell.
Since DC Comics's 2011 relaunch "The New 52," heroes and villains who have traditionally not existed in the same time and place as the central DC timeline have had a rough go of it.
In spite of stellar reviews, All-Star Western with Jonah Hex was cancelled. So were the two books featuring characters from the Legion of Super-Heroes. Time-traveler Booster Gold lost his solo title when Flashpoint hit in 2011 and appeared only briefly in the quickly-cancelled Justice League International before making a handful of seemingly-random appearances thereafter. He's currently missing in action.
Probably the group most impacted by the changes, though, was the Justice Society of America. DC's Golden Age heroes who first resided on Earth-2 and then, after the Crisis on Infinite Earths merged the worlds of the multiverse, in Earth's World War II-era past.
I DO have a JSA story in mind, yes https://t.co/TSqGrp5SVF

Since the relaunch, the JSA has been largely absent. A version of the characters exists, and those characters have starred in Earth-2, Earth 2: Worlds End and Earth 2: Society, but they differ from the classic Justice Society characters in numerous important ways, not least of which is that the heroes are young and living in the present day, rather than being the seasoned veterans they've always been in the past.
In May's DC Universe: Rebirth, Johnny Thunder -- a man who has a long history with the JSA -- showed up and implied that he and only he remembered the Justice Society's history. This happened in the same issue a woman wearing a Legion of Super-Heroes flight ring appeared, suggesting that while neither the JSA nor the Legion were getting a Rebirth-branded ongoing series, there are changes on the way for those teams.
Snyder, who tweeted his admission about the Justice Society after being asked a specific question from a fan about the team, didn't go on to specify what his take is or what version of the Justice Society it would involve.
The team will appear this season in DC's Legends of Tomorrow, headed up by Lance Henriksen as Obsidian and Patrick J. Adams as Hourman. Besides All-Star Batman, Snyder is working on a number of creator-owned projects right now, and a film version of his Image Comics series Wytches (with co-creator Jock) is expected to go into pre-production soon.
