In last year’s Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn and the Joker featured prominently in the plot about super villains being coerced into saving the world. The film featured flashbacks with visuals heavily inspired by classic artwork by Bruce Timm and Alex Ross, including the dance sequence with Harley in the costume from the animated series.

The sequence was barely shown in the film, but Suicide Squad director David Ayer just posted a picture to social media featuring the two in the famous pose similar to Ross’ artwork. Take a look at the image below.

The sequence in Suicide Squad is very brief, appearing when Amanda Waller is detailing Harley’s origin as a criminal and her subsequent relationship with the Clown Prince of Crime.

Ayer’s picture features the actors in a similar pose as Ross’ art, though in the photograph Jared Leto is looking at her while in the original piece the Joker stares menacingly at the viewer.

Tango With Evil

The image and that sequence were directly inspired by Ross’ painting “Tango With Evil,” in which Joker clad in a tuxedo dances with his girlfriend/sidekick.

The original painting is so popular among DC Comics fans that another was commissioned by Ross, featuring the Batman stepping in and choking the Joker while pushing Harley to the side.

Though actor Margot Robbie donned a different costume throughout Suicide Squad, this animated series-version made a couple of brief appearances in a few different Easter Eggs.

This brief sequence was one instance in which it appeared. When the Squad is gearing up to leave Belle Reeve and embark on their mission, Harley pulls this costume out but opts to wear something more practical. And the costume appears again on a mannequin for a shot in the Joker’s layer.

Ayer has consistently posting new images featuring the Joker from his time shooting Suicide Squad, though none are sure to rile up fans like this one did. That sequence was one of the most memorable visuals in Suicide Squad, with Joker and Harley being one of the best aspects of the movie.

More Joker and Harley Quinn

Maybe we’ll see more in the Gotham City Sirens movie, the Joker/Harley “Mad Love” movie, the Suicide Squad sequel, or the Joker Origin Movie when those films release.
