In the closing moments of last week's episode of The Flash, after a valiant Jay Garrick volunteered to swap places with Wally West in the Speed Force in order to free the impetuous speedster, Barry Allen met up with Iris West in their apartment and admitted to her that he proposed for the wrong reason. He finished the emotional conversation with a bombshell, telling her that he wants to spend time apart from her while he tries to figure out how to save her in the future from Savitar.
"I think for Barry and Iris there's always a way to come back," Candice Patton told Rotten Tomatoes this weekend at Paleyfest 2017. "They are really and truly each other's true loves. They just have to get on the same page and stick with it."
Though most of Tuesday's musical crossover episode will take place in a dream world constructed by the Music Meister, Iris and Barry's relationship won't be put on the back burner. "You'll see at the end of the musical where Iris and Barry are," EP Todd Helbing said. "It sort of kickstarts the last six episodes. There's another episode further down the line were Barry does something to get a key piece of information to help them, and that really snowballs into the last couple episodes."
DARREN CRISS ("GLEE") GUEST STARS AS THE MUSIC MEISTER IN THE FLASH AND SUPERGIRL MUSICAL CROSSOVER – Barry (Grant Gustin) and team are surprised when Mon-El (guest star Chris Wood) and Hank Henshaw (guest star David Harewood) arrive on their Earth carrying a comatose Supergirl (guest star Melissa Benoist) who was whammied by the Music Meister (guest star Darren Criss). Unable to wake her up, they turn to Team Flash to save her.
However, the Music Meister surprises The Flash and puts him in a similar coma, one that Team Flash can't cure. Kara and Barry wake up without their powers in an alternate reality where life is like a musical and the only way to escape is by following the script, complete with singing and dancing, to the end.
Dermott Downs directed the episode with story by Greg Berlanti & Andrew Kreisberg and teleplay by Aaron Helbing & Todd Helbing.
