Wonder Woman's Box Office Opening Expected To Lasso In Lots Of Money
Wonder Woman is only a few short days away from its premiere, and fans are gearing up for the the heroine's comeback. After debuting in Batman v Superman, Diana Prince will take fans back in time as Wonder Woman delves into the icon's origin. Gal Gadot will lead moviegoers into World War I as Diana enters the world of man and learns just what being a superhero entails. With critics fawning over the feature, the DC Extended Universe is expected to bank some major money off the film at the box office. And, if new reports are correct, then Wonder Woman could very well rake in lots of domestic moola when its opens domestically.
According to the LA Times, Wonder Woman is on track to rake $80-90 million in ticket sales during its opening weekend. The figures are predicted to come in from the U.S. and Canada before the feature rolls out its international releases. For now, Warner Bros. is tip-toeing around that number and predicting a more moderate $65-70 million domestic opening instead.
For DC Entertainment, the numbers aren't totally unexpected. After all, the company's president has said audiences have harbored a need to see Wonder Woman in the DCEU for some time now.
"There is a pent-up appetite for seeing a female hero with the strength that Wonder Woman has," Diane Nelson explained. "People are ready for it."
So far, the DCEU has had plenty of luck when it comes to domestic box office openings. Most recently, Suicide Squad raked in more than $133 million when it opened. Batman v Superman earned $166 million while Man of Steel collected $116 million. These numbers track higher than those expected from Wonder Woman, but insiders predict the film's overall domestic gross will match the previous DCEU fans by the end of its run. Wonder Woman is a pop culture icon, but the heroine does has less cinematic fame than Superman or Batman by far. When word-of-mouth spreads about Wonder Woman, many predict box office numbers to surge in its second and even third weekends.
