A lot of Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers had faulty connections at launch. This was a good thing and a bad thing. It was annoying for obvious reasons, but it was also really great because it encouraged people to grab their tri-wing screwdrivers and crack open those Joy-Con for themselves to get tinkering. This has resulted in a lot of DIY pride, and a lot of custom controllers. If you’re going to take it apart, why not give the plates a little paint job while you’re at it?
That’s what Alexander Blake has done, and he showed off his custom Pikachu / Pokรฉmon Joy-Con controllers on imgur. You can find them here. These suckers are a classic Pikachu yellow, and the reverse side of the Joy-Con sport a Pokeball. When you place the two Joy-Con side by side, the Pokeball comes together. DIY Joy-Con paint jobs are going to become more common going forward. You can find tutorials everywhere explaining everything you need to do to take these things apart and do whatever you want with them. We’ve seen some crazy-inspired paint jobs that make the Joy-Con look like Super Nintendo controllers, Super Famicom controllers, Game Cube controllers, and more. The retro console mimicry has been a popular go-to, but we like the fandom on display here.
Of course, the only downside to doing this is the voiding of your warranty. If your Joy-Con start acting up and it’s not something you can repair on your own, if you send Nintendo a pair of Joy-Con that have very obviously been taken apart and customized, you’re delusional if you think Nintendo is going to repair those on its own dime.
Still, we kind of want you to try it anyway, and we want you to send us in some pictures of your controllers when they’re done. Who knows, our next custom Joy-Con article could feature your controllers!
