Following the resounding success of Kong: Skull Island (it grossed over $560 million at the box office), director Jordan Vogt-Roberts is ready to tackle quite the ambitious project for his next film – an adaptation of Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid.

But he’s taking it very seriously, and as proof, he’s brought in a trusted screenwriter to help bring Solid Snake’s journey to the big screen to life.
Variety recently reported that Derek Connolly, who previously wrote the box office hit Jurassic World, would be writing the latest draft of the script for Sony’s soon-to-be Metal Gear Solid film, which will be directed by Vogt-Roberts. The two previously worked together on Skull Island, with Connolly writing the script alongside Dan Gilroy and Max Borenstein, so they should be pretty well used to working together.
Avi Arad, who previously worked on the Spider-Man films, will serve as producer for the upcoming adaptation, which currently doesn’t have a release date. It’s unknown if Konami is involved in the production or not, but considering how big a franchise Metal Gear is to them – Metal Gear Survive is releasing early next year, after all – we wouldn’t be surprised if they were.
One party that doesn’t seem to be involved is Kojima, since he’s so busy with Death Stranding anyway. And his public departure from Konami pretty much assures he’s done with the franchise. That said, Vogt-Roberts has made it clear in the past that he hopes to stick with Kojima’s vision, and not take the usual route that other video game-to-movie adaptations have taken. (Looking at you, Assassin’s Creed.)
Connolly has been quite busy following the success of Jurassic World. He’s already been brought back to write Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which will release next year and bring back Chris Pratt, as well as Jeff Goldblum from the earlier films in the series. Still, he looks to have more than enough time to put a nice twist on Metal Gear Solid. Plus, where else would a resume feature dinosaurs, a giant ape and Solid Snake? That’s the kind of resume we’d love to have.
We’ll keep you informed on the production of Metal Gear Solid as it comes along.
