1990s SNES Series Officially Returns With Brand New Game

A 1990s SNES series is officially returning with a brand new game. The series in question specifically dates all the way back to 1996. Unlike many series from this time that went dormant for a while and then returned once those nostalgic for these games had reliable disposable income, this series never went anywhere between 1996 and 2026, getting many releases along the way. This is to say, a new release in the nostalgic SNES series is not surprising in the slightest.

More specifically, the Tokyo-based developer Marvelous has announced that following 2025’s remake, Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar, a proper new Story of Seasons game is in development. There is no title for this new game. There is no word of a release window, let alone a release date. And there is no word on platforms. There is next to nothing on the game, except for an announcement trailer, which can be seen below.

It’s 1996 Again

For those who do not know, Story of Seasons traces its origin back to 1996 and Harvest Moon, the biggest pioneering game for the farm life sim genre. The series as a whole, meanwhile, serves as the primary inspiration for the modern farm life sim resurgence, primarily driven by Stardew Valley and carried forth by newer releases like Fields of Mistria, one of the best games of 2026.

Harvest Moon was notably an SNES exclusive when it released, and was actually not received all that well. To this end, it only has a 73% on GameRankings. It proved very popular, though, and established the genre. For a while, the genre was very niche, but Stardew Valley took it, evolved it, and propelled it into the mainstream, making it bigger than ever before.

It’s worth noting that this may not be a brand new installment. It’s possible it’s going to be a remake of a previous game. If this were going to be the case, you’d think it would be announced this way, but this is certainly a possibility, especially given the recent history of the series and general industry trends.

As you would expect, fans of the series are excited, despite a lack of salient details. To this end, the trailer above currently has 116 likes and zero dislikes.

“It’s about time Marvelous takes on visual fidelity,” reads the top comment on the trailer. Another adds, “I’m so excited.” Meanwhile, others point out they hope it’s a brand new game rather than a remake.
