Steam Makes PC and Steam Deck Game Entirely Free for July

Steam has a new free game — available until July 30 — that is playable on both PC and Steam Deck. The latest free Steam game is a 2017 game, and a game with an 82% approval rating on the Valve platform after 544 user reviews. This is sufficient to earn the PC game a “Very Positive” rating on Steam, which is the second-highest rating a PC game can earn on the platform. Meanwhile, as noted, the Steam game is playable on Steam Deck. It’s not Steam Deck Verified, but Valve does list it as “Playable.”

Back in 2017, an independent developer self-published a zombie shooter with tower defense elements that supports both local and online co-op for up to four players called Yet Another Zombie Defense HD. As the name alludes to, the premise and ambition of the game are quite simple, hence its normal $3.99 asking price. That said, while the premise is simple and the budget humble, it’s apparently a decent game for what it is worth, or at least that is what an 82% approval rating on the Valve storefront suggests.

A Simple, But Solid Zombie Game

For those just learning about this 2017 game, it is about defending yourself against hordes of zombies that attack every single night. That said, failure is inevitable. Eventually, the waves of darkness will become too much, and you will fall to the horde, which is why it’s important to go out in style. To this end, this is not just a game about surviving as long as possible, but about enjoying the process of mowing down hordes of enemies.

This is the premise. As for the gameplay, it is a top-down arcade shooter with zombies and tactical/strategy elements. It can be played solo or via local co-op or online co-op, with support for up to four players. Meanwhile, players will have three modes to choose from: Defense, Endless, and Deathmatch.

“Fun game to play with friends. Highly recommend,” reads the user review with the most votes up, suggesting this simple endorsement of the game is reflective of most players.

A second popular user review adds: “It’s a fun little casual game; I love that it has co-op, which makes it 10 times better.”

Of course, there are much, much better games on Steam, but these games are locked behind a purchase. For those on the tightest of budgets, or for those looking for something simple and fun to play with friends, there is a solid couple of nights of enjoyment that can be had here.
