Guardians Vol. 2: Get To Know Ego In New Movie Clips

One of the biggest surprises for longtime Guardians of the Galaxy fans is the introduction of Ego the living planet. The part is played by Kurt Russell in the sequel, and now a prolonged introduction is available to view.

Marvel Studios has released two new clips for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The first is titled simply “Ego”, and lets fans meet Star-Lord’s estranged dad. “Trash Panda” is the second clip, and features the lovely dysfunctional team dynamic that fans have grown to love. Speaking of Ego, Russell knew he wanted to be a part of the franchise after seeing the original. “Fifteen minutes in, I said, ‘I think I see why they’re coming to me…’
Russell said. “The baggage I bring from some of the movies I’ve done is the right kind of baggage to bring into this one. I’ve never played anybody bigger! I’ve never played a character with broader possibilities.”

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).

Next up for Marvel is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on May 5, 2017. Spider-Man: Homecoming lands on July 7, 2017, followed by Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017. After that Black Panther debuts on February 16, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018. Ant-Man and the Wasp is slated for July 6, 2018, followed by Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019.

Ego

The first clip reveals the very first time Star-Lord (played by Chris Pratt) meets Ego. The team is just as surprised to find out he’s Quill’s father, and that dynamic is a big part of why Russell was excited to play the part.

“Realizing that a lot of Peter Quill’s behavior, it makes sense when you think about some of the things that I did,” Russell said to ComicBook.com. “He didn’t have to pitch that. He let me read it and I go, ‘Well, I got it, I understand.’ I really love the opportunity to play Ego the Living Planet. There’s no parameters there.”

It resonated with Russell, who’s seen what that sort of relationship can do to someone. “I supposed part of it was because I’ve seen in my life children whose father wasn’t there,” Russell said. “Parents who something horrible happened and they wondered what they were like. And in both cases, as human beings do, they built up an imaginary person in their mind. The idea of finally getting a chance to come together, gives you the reality to deal with.”

Trash Panda

This clip could have easily been called “Star Munch”, but it’s that name calling that elicits Peter Quill to call Rocket a name he hates…Raccoon. Unfortunately for him the rest of the team isn’t as familiar with earth slang, so Quill takes advantage and gives Rocket a new name. And no, it isn’t better.

This back and forth is one of the reasons Pratt loves the Marvel movies, and he recently said he doesn’t plan on leaving anytime soon. “I’ll tell you, as much as I love Marvel, it doesn’t matter how many I have contracted because I’m going to continue to work with them.” When he was asked about renewing he said “Totally, dude. I want to – I love working with them. I’m going to continue to work with them whether they like it or not. Even if they write me out, I’m going to show up on set and be like, ‘Hey, man!’ They’re done. They don’t get to shake me.”
