Thor Generations Reveals Surprising Odin, Phoenix Relationship

Today’s installment of Marvel’s Generations series just revealed a hidden relationship between two of the Marvel Universe’s most powerful characters.

Odin, the All-Father of Asgard and father of Thor, has one of the most powerful exes in the entire Marvel Universe: the Phoenix.

The latest installment of Generations, written by Jason Aaron and drawn by Mahmud Asrar, mostly focuses on telling the story of young Thor, the Odinson, battling Apocalypse and Clan Akkaba in Egypt and being joined by Thor, Jane Foster, who was mysteriously transported back in time to the Viking era due to some as of yet untold consequences of the conclusion of Secret Empire.

Odin is also present in the story, mostly discouraging his son from bothering to try to lift Mjolnir and encouraging him to behave more like as Asgardian and spend less time on Midgard.

However, it is revealed at the issue’s end that Odin had a wild phase in his youth (at least relative youth) as well, where he spent time on Midgard and made some friends, some of them more intimate than others.

Odin is one of the Avengers of 10,000 BC featured in the upcoming Marvel Legacy, and at the end of the Thor Generations one-shot Odin is seen reminiscing about their past. Phoenix is quick to dismiss him and his dalliances, leaving him to pine for what she implies is a misremembered youth, but the final page teases that the story will continue in Marvel Legacy #1.

It is interesting that the Phoenix should appear here as the Phoenix has been making several appearances throughout the Marvel Universe. In the pages of The Mighty Thor, the war between Asgard and the Shi’ar ends with the mutant Kid Omega absorbing a portion of the Phoenix. In Thanos, the Phoenix Force has also given its power to Thanos’ son, the Inhuman Thane. Meanwhile, in the Jean Grey series, Jean has seen visions of the Phoenix Force coming to possess her and has been training with various heroes of the Marvel Universe, including Odinson, in order to prepare to resist it. Could Marvel be building to a bigger, Phoenix-centric storyline?
