This week, Transformers will rush back into theaters with its fifth film, and fans may be surprised when they sit in for the feature. After a decade on-screen, moviegoers will see a new side of Optimus Prime as the Autobots icon seems to have turned to the dark side. The trailers for Transformers: The Last Knight have shown Optimus Prime turning against his former comrades as he tries to have his own home from destruction. However, it looks like there’s a small chance Optimus Prime isn’t who fans think he is in the film.

Recently, director Michael Bay did an interview with Fandango where he talked about his final Transformers hurrah. Bay was asked during the chat whether The Last Knight actually sets up an appearance for Nemesis Prime, a clone from the Transformers universe with a colorful history. Here is what the director had to say:
“Listen, wars start in the world and it’s always about protecting one’s home and that’s all I’ll really say,” Bay said. “But that’s how wars have always started and that’s what’s gone through history and maybe even pertains to aliens, as well.”
If you are not familiar with Nemesis Prime, then you have a bit to catch up on. In the Transformers universe, the character is a dark-mirror clone of Optimus Prime who lacks all morality but has all the skills. Fans have speculated the arrival of Nemesis Prime since Age of Extinction hit theaters. The film ended with Optimus Prime heading to space to find his maker, and there is always a chance the Autobot could have encountered his clone’s dark dimension.
For now, fans are still on-the-fence about a possible Nemesis Prime appearance. Turning Optimus Prime into a villain is a controversial move for the film franchise, but it gives the project an intriguing hook. There is always the chance that Optimus Prime has simply been corrupted by the Unicron but delving into such a story would take some explanation.
So, what do you think? Are you wanting Transformers: The Last Knight to bring in Nemesis Prime, or do you want Optimus Prime to be a baddie himself? Hit us up on Twitter @ComicBook to let us know!
