One of the best creature features since Jaws is now streaming for free, and it’s a must-watch for any fan of Stephen Spielberg’s 1975 summer blockbuster. In the five decades since Jaws swam into theaters and sparked a deep-rooted fear of sharks in generations of audiences, numerous directors have added their names to the monster movie genre with stories about everything from man-eating anacondas in the Amazon to giant spiders, giant worms, and even a 75-foot-long prehistoric shark. While some creature features have failed to live up to the hype of Jaws, a 2019 film was a solid entry in the genre and scored a fresh Rotten Tomatoes score, and it’s now easier than ever to stream.

Director Alexandre Aja’s 2019 natural horror film Crawl started streaming on Tubi, Fox’s free streaming service, on September 1st, and it’s a must-watch for creature feature fans. The movie is set in Florida in the middle of a Category 5 hurricane and stars Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper as a daughter and father who find themselves trapped in the crawl space of their home, which is infested with a pack of gigantic alligators. Morfydd Clark, Ross Anderson, Jose Palma, Colin McFarlane, George Somner, Anson Boon, and Ami Metcalf also star.
Why You Should Watch Crawl
Crawl is a perfect watch for any fan of Jaws or the creature feature genre. A standout among modern creature features, the movie takes itself seriously rather than leaning into the absurdity of a massive killer animal, utilizing the claustrophobic atmosphere of the singular setting and a fight for survival against not only the alligators but also rising floodwaters to successfully achieve a genuinely thrilling and intense survival movie. Aja’s directing adds to the suspense felt throughout the film by helping to place the viewer in the middle of the action, and combined with non-stop action, brutal gore, and strong performances from the leads, Crawl is easily a gripping ride from start to finish.
Crawl was not Aja’s first endeavor into the horror genre, but it was his best. The movie grossed $91 million on a $13.5–15 million production budget, surpassing the box office hauls of Aja’s other titles like The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D, and Horns. The movie was also a critical success and holds a “Certified Fresh” distinction on Rotten Tomatoes with an 84% critics’ score and a critics’ consensus that reads, “An action-packed creature feature that’s fast, terrifying, and benefits greatly from a completely game Kaya Scodelario, Crawl is a fun throw-back with just enough self-awareness to work.” The film’s audience score sits at 75%.
