The Two Best Halloween Sequels Finally Return to Streaming (And They’re on the Same Service)

While there’s never exactly a bad time of year to watch horror movies, the months of September and October definitely stand out as the best part of the year for the genre. The two months leading to Halloween are called Spooky Season for a reason, and horror movie fans often take the opportunity to discover scary new hits, revisit iconic favorites from the past, or work their way through any number of long-running horror franchises. One of the most prominent rewatch marathons throughout the season is, of course, Halloween, the slasher franchise centered on Michael Myers, and the two best sequels from that series just returned to streaming.

Peacock added an army of horror films on September 1st, including the first two sequels in the Halloween franchise. The streamer’s lineup at the start of the month added 1981’s Halloween II and 1982’s Halloween III: Season of the Witch. For anyone trying to binge through the Halloween films before October 31st, your mission just got a lot easier to accomplish.

The Best Halloween Sequels

Horror master John Carpenter’s original Halloween is in a league of its own when it comes to this franchise, with none of the sequels over the last five decades coming close to reaching the same heights. Overall, the Halloween franchise is largely known for producing bad movies after the arrival of the 1980s. However, those first two sequels still stand out to many as being the best of the bunch, with Season of the Witch actually getting more favorable with fans over time.

Halloween II is about as straight-forward a Halloween sequel as you’d expect, with Michael Myers picking up after the cliffhanger from the first movie and continuing to chase Jamie Lee Curtis’ iconic Final Girl, Laurie Strode. It’s not as scary or well-executed as Carpenter’s movie, but Halloween II does enough to get the job done. The continuity is what a lot of fans appreciate with this one.

Then there’s Halloween III, which has become beloved for the exact opposite reason. When it was first released in 1982, Halloween III: Season of the Witch was hated by a large portion of the fan base because, despite its title, the film had nothing to do with Michael Myers or Laurie Strode. This was an experiment in turning Halloween into more of anthology franchise, with sequels exploring haunting new tales from All Hallows Eve. The idea landed with a thud, especially after the first two Halloween films told one continuous story.

Removed from the disappointment and confusion of a Michael-less Halloween, horror fans have grown to adore Season of the Witch over the last 40 years. It’s an immensely fun movie with surprising twists, eerie imagery, and fantastic effects. You’ll find a huge number of Halloween fans nowadays that believe Halloween III is undoubtedly the best sequel of the bunch.
