Frozen 3’s First Story Details Revealed, Promises a Major First for a Disney Princess

The original Frozen became a worldwide sensation, grossing over $1.28 billion and captivating audiences with its tale of sisterhood, empowerment, and unforgettable songs like the Academy Award-winning “Let It Go.” Its 2019 sequel, Frozen II, continued this monumental success, surpassing the original with a global box office of more than $1.45 billion and expanding the lore of Arendelle and Elsa’s  (voiced by Idina Menzel) magical powers. The immense popularity of the films has led to a vast franchise encompassing short films, merchandise, and theme park attractions across the globe. With Disney already confirming that both a third and fourth Frozen film are in development, anticipation is incredibly high for the next chapter in the lives of Queen Anna (voiced by Kristen Bell) and the elemental spirit Elsa.

The first purported details of the next installment have emerged, hinting at a significant evolution for the royal family of Arendelle. An official synopsis for Frozen 3 was reportedly shared during a Disney Consumer Products Division Launch Conference in Shanghai, China. While the original materials from the event are no longer available online, multiple sources replicated the synopsis, which, though unconfirmed by Disney, aligns with the franchise’s recent history of deconstructing classic fairytale tropes.

The translated synopsis reads: “In this new chapter, witness the wedding of the century in Arendelle as Queen Anna walks down the aisle and joins Elsa on a new magical journey filled with unknown challenges. And what’s even more exciting: the royal family is about to welcome a mysterious new member!”

The most tantalizing detail from the rumored synopsis is the arrival of a “mysterious new member” to the royal family, a phrase that immediately sparks speculation that Queen Anna and Kristoff (voiced by Jonathan Groff) may be expecting a child. Should this prove true, it would mark a groundbreaking moment for a theatrically released Walt Disney Animation Studios film. Within the official Disney Princess canon, motherhood has remained almost entirely unexplored in major cinematic releases. While Anna and Elsa are not officially part of the branded “Disney Princess” lineup—largely because the Frozen franchise is a commercial powerhouse in its own right—they are culturally regarded as such and have redefined the archetype for a new generation.

To date, the only official Disney Princess to have a child within her film series is Ariel. However, her daughter, Melody, was introduced in the 2000 direct-to-video sequel, The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea, not a theatrical feature. Other princesses have had children in spinoff media like the Descendants television movies, but never in a primary animated theatrical film. A storyline involving Anna’s pregnancy and the birth of a royal heir would be a significant first for Disney’s big-screen fairytales, moving a central princess character into a new stage of life rarely depicted in its cinematic universe. This development would continue Frozen’s tradition of pushing narrative boundaries, shifting the focus from finding a prince to navigating marriage, family, and the responsibilities of leadership.

The “mysterious” descriptor in the synopsis could also suggest a different kind of arrival, such as a long-lost relative, a path the franchise has explored before with the revelation of Anna and Elsa’s mother’s history in Frozen II. However, the prospect of a royal baby offers a more forward-looking and unprecedented direction for the beloved characters of Arendelle.

Frozen 3 is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 24, 2027.
