Every action movie needs a good villain and according to Julianne Moore her role as the villainous Poppy in Kingsman: The Golden Circle reminded her of an iconic Superman movie villain.

In the upcoming Kingsman sequel, Moore’s Poppy is a wicked, brutal villain who has surrounded herself in a world, aptly named Poppy Land, that is full of adorable, 50’s kitsch. It’s a jarring juxtaposition and one that Moore told ComicBook.com immediately made her think of Gene Hackman‘s Lex Luthor.
“Well you know, it’s interesting because I realized that when I read it right away the first person I thought of was Gene Hackman in Superman, which is a movie I grew up with.” Moore said. “I can remember, I remember very clearly Gene Hackman and Valerie Perrine in that like lair, in that cave and how ordinary they seemed, how their concerns seemed real and they were always fighting and there was all this kind of stuff happening I thought that’s kind of how I saw this. Here’s this person who’s a villain, she’s a megalomaniac, she’s trying to control the world but she just wants what anybody would want.”
In Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Moore’s Poppy is the head of the global drug business, but unlike most drug lord villains, Poppy’s goals go beyond money. Like Hackman’s Luthor, what Poppy is going for looking for is something a little less tangible but something that is ultimately very human.
“She wants legitimacy,” More said. “She wants to be acknowledged for her business prowess, you know? So, the idea of having that kind of this huge outsized world and this outsized ego but with fairly — well I guess normal behavior is not quite what it is — but human behavior, that was interesting to me.”
The idea of anything about Poppy’s behavior even approaching normal might be a bit of a hard sell to some audiences, however. Like its predecessor, the film contains a lot of violence and one particular scene that was shared at San Diego Comic Con back in July involving a meat grinder has had people talking. Moore said that scene even got to her a bit.
“Oddly people have talked about the action too, like I don’t participate in the action so much,” Moore said. “I get everybody to do my dirty work for me So in a sense it was around me but I wasn’t in it, but yes, the meat, that meat grinder thing, that’s tough to take.”
Kingsman: The Golden Circle opens in theaters on September 22, 2017
