Netflix’s BioShock film adaptation has had quite the time making it to the finish line, as the BioShock film was announced back in 2022 and yet still seems to be stuck in development. There have been promising updates from time to time, and it still seems to be a priority for Netflix, but not much in the way of concrete details have been made public. That’s starting to change though, and today fans finally know a key detail about the impending release that should get them hyped, even if they will have to wait a while longer to see it on the screen.

In a new interview with The Direct regarding his new film The Long Walk, producer Roy Lee revealed a significant detail about Francis Lawrence’s Bioshock film. When asked if there was anything he could tease about the story and the approach to the movie, Lee said, “Netflix wants us to keep everything under wraps. But it’s definitely going to be based on the first ‘BioShock’ gameโฆ”
When Will Bioshock Release?
That’s big news in itself, but Lee wasn’t done sharing key details. Unfortunately, his next revelation made it clear that fans will have to wait a while longer before they see that original BioShock game adapted into a film.
“Well, ‘The Long Walk‘ became a reality because ‘BioShock‘ was delayed for a little bit where we had to do some more script work. And so as the script work is being done, we shot ‘The Long Walk,’ and he was already committed to doing the next ‘Hunger Games‘ movie. And so it’s just waiting for him whenever the ‘Hunger Games’ is completed, and the script is just being worked on right now.”
Production is already happening for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping in Spain, and the film is set for a release date of November 2026. If BioShock is next, that means we could be looking at production and filming for it either late this year or early next year. That would set it up for release late in 2026 or more than likely early 2027 at the earliest, though it’s important not to jump the gun with a film that’s taken this long to become a reality.
The Original Game is the Right Choice
While there have been three different entries in the BioShock franchise, the original game from 2007 is still the unquestioned champion of the franchise and the most beloved. The original game introduced fans to the would-be utopia of Rapture, which hid gruesome enemies, walking tanks known as Big Daddies, Little Sisters, and an unhinged leader at the center of it known as Andrew Ryan.
As much as the first-person shooting and powers-based gameplay were praised, it was really the game’s story that was truly applauded, especially as the game threw in one of gaming’s biggest twists towards the story’s end. Both BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinite have their share of fans as well, but the original is the clear right choice in terms of adapting for film or TV, and it seems it might actually happen sooner than perhaps you thought.
