One of the Best Crime Dramas of All Time Is Streaming Free (And It’s as Entertaining as Ever)

One of the best crime dramas of all time just made its way to a free streaming service, and it still holds up nearly 40 years after its release. The past few weeks in the streaming landscape have seen numerous iconic films find new streaming homes, giving subscribers the chance to watch hit movies like Inglourious Basterds, Clueless, and Definitely, Maybe. Movie lovers looking for an all-around good film that offers a gritty and unromanticized look into the world of organized crime now need to look no further than Tubi.

Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas started streaming on Tubi, Fox’s free streaming service, on September 1st. The movie is an adaptation of Nicholas Pileggi’s 1985 book Wiseguy and remains not only one of the best gangster movies of all time, and one that ranks alongside the likes of The Godfather, but also one of the best movies ever. The film chronicles the rise and fall of Mafia associate Henry Hill, covering his relationship with his wife and mob partners and his rise through the ranks of his neighborhood’s organized crime branch to become a big-time wise guy and eventually a federal witness.

Why You Should Watch Goodfellas

Much of what there is to love about Goodfellas and why it’s still a cinematic masterpiece has Scorsese to credit. The movie marked a career-defining film for Scorsese. Although the filmmaker had already built a solid reputation in Hollywood with movies like Taxi Driver and Raging Bull by the time Goodfellas released in 1990, the gangster film was widely loved by critics and brought his directing style to a wider audience. The movie marked a return to the gritty, street-level gangster stories of Scorsese’s early career and showcased the height of his talents and style with rapid editing, extreme close-ups, bold camerawork, and an iconic three-minute tracking shot that helped create an engaging and immersive cinematic experience, not to mention a nonlinear narrative structure that is now a hallmark of his career.
