Daniel Radcliffe experienced a meteoric rise to fame after he landed the role of Harry Potter in the movie adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s book series. The actor spent a decade on the big screen portraying the Boy Who Lived across eight films. Just a year after wielding a wand for the final battle against Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, Radcliffe returned to the big screen in his first post-Harry Potter project, a massively underrated horror movie that just found a new streaming home.

Director James Watkins’s 2012 adaptation of Susan Hill’s 1983 The Woman in Black made its return to streaming on September 1st when it joined the Paramount+ content catalog. The Gothic supernatural horror movie is set in early 20th-century England and stars Radcliffe as Arthur Kipps, a young recently widowed lawyer who is sent to an isolated village to sort out the affairs of a recently deceased client. Upon his arrival, it becomes clear that the villagers are hiding a secret, and Kipps soon discovers his late client’s house is haunted by the spirit of a vengeful woman who terrorizes the locals. Ciarán Hinds, Janet McTeer, Sophie Stuckey, and Liz White also star.
Why You Should Watch The Woman in Black
The Woman in Black was a solid post-Harry Potter movie for Radcliffe and helped showcase his versatility as an actor. Marking a stark departure from Harry Potter, Radcliffe’s portrayal of the grief-stricken Arthur Kipps was a strong re-introduction that proved the actor could take on more mature, emotionally subdued, and nuanced roles and command the screen without an ensemble cast behind him. Radcliffe would ultimately go on to show off his horror acting chops once more in Horns (2013) and Victor Frankenstein (2015).
More than just a highlight in Radcliffe’s acting career that helped showcase his acting range, The Woman in Black is a chillingly effective horror movie that has all of the qualities of a horror great. A classic haunted house story, the movie succeeds at a slow-burn suspense that doesn’t rely on jump scares or constant gore. The movie is instead an extremely mood-driven experience and maintains a creepy tone through the dark, suspenseful atmosphere and unsettling environment at the isolated Eel Marsh House, brought to life through an extremely detailed set design. The Woman in Black grossed $130 million worldwide and holds a 66% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
