Hugh Jackman's third and final Wolverine film is targeting an R-rating, there will be an R-rated cut of Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice released on Blu-ray, and now director Peyton Reed is one-upping them all with plans of an NC-17 rating for Marvel's Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Reed tweeted, "Breaking: ANT-MAN AND THE WASP is going FULL NC-17. Confirmed."
This is of course a joke. Reed is poking fun at the recent Wolverine and Batman V. Superman news, which comes in the wake of the massive success of Deadpool.
Fox's first R-rated standalone superhero movie is having a major influence on other comic book properties, as it proved moviegoers have an appetite for mature content. Neither Fox nor Warner Bros. will admit Deadpool's success had anything to do with their R-rated decision making, but it would be foolish to believe the timing of both were just a coincidence. Put it this way, if Deadpool bombed at the box office I highly-doubt we would have ever heard about either.
I look forward to seeing more comic book movies that are R-rated, but I fear that studios are missing the point with Deadpool's success. To paraphrase lyrics from the Diff'rent Strokes theme song: What might be right for Deadpool, may not be right for some.
The sequel, Ant-Man and The Wasp, will arrive in theaters July 6, 2018.0comments
