As the year comes to a close, Prime Video is bringing some big movie titles to its streaming lineup. This week, the service added what many (including myself) consider to be one of the best and most entertaining movies of the year, a brand new adventure from Wes Anderson that is a lot funnier than even his dedicated fans expected it to be.

That film, of course, is The Phoenician Scheme, which stars Benicio del Toro as an arms dealer who escapes several assassination attempts and tries to convince his daughter to take over his company. As wild as the plot sounds (and it is totally bonkers), The Phoenician Scheme is a genuinely great comedy, and it just hit Prime Video’s lineup on Friday morning.
While del Toro is the outright star of the film, The Phoenician Scheme boasts and incredible ensemble cast filled with some of the biggest names around. Mia Threapleton and Michael Cera are the other leads in the movie, but the expansive cast also includes Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, Scarlett Johansson, Jeffrey Wright, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, and Bill Murray.
Like Anderson’s other work, The Phoenician Scheme has a very unique style and tone to it, one that might put off some viewers at first glance. But I’d urge you to give it a chance anyway, specifically because this movie is easily one of the director’s silliest and most accessible. As someone who took a long time to warm up to Anderson’s brand of storytelling, The Phoenician Scheme instantly won me over with its charm and humor.
What’s New on Prime Video?
December is shaping up to be a big month for Prime Video, as it looks to add several of the year’s most popular films (which have been exclusively on rival streamers to this point). The Phoenician Scheme is the first December domino to fall, but there are some much bigger titles coming closer to the end of the month.
Sinners, one of the most acclaimed and talked-about movies in years, is coming to Prime Video on December 26th. That same week, the streamer will be adding smash-hit A Minecraft Movie and laugh-out-loud comedy The Naked Gun.
As if that wasn’t enough, Prime has already added a bunch of great movies in these first few days of the month. December 1st represented a huge day of new additions, with films like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Mad Max, and Zombieland all coming to the service, along with all 15 seasons of Supernatural.
