Tubi Finally Streaming One of the Most Successful Animated Movies of All-Time, But There’s a Problem

Animated movies have consistently been some of the biggest films to hit the big screen. Appealing to moviegoers of all ages and with eye-catching visuals that introduce fantastical worlds and imaginative storylines, animated movies have garnered massive box office hauls and often high ratings from critics and audience members, with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Inside Out 2, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse marking some of the most recent animated hits. Streamers looking for a new movie the entire family can watch can now stream Illumination’s Despicable Me 3 on Tubi. The movie, serving as the fourth overall film in the Despicable Me franchise and a sequel to Despicable Me 2, sees Steve Carell return to the franchise in a dual role, voicing both Gru and his long-lost twin brother Dru as they team up to take down Balthazar Bratt, an ’80s child star turned supervillain seeking revenge after his show was canceled years ago. The film started streaming on the free streaming platform on September 1st. However, Tubi doesn’t host the rest of the franchise, with most of the rest of the films streaming on Netflix.

Why You Should Watch Despicable Me 3

With a 58% critics’ score and a 53% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Despicable Me 3 is far from the best movie in the franchise in terms of overall approval rating, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie. The film brings back the bright, colorful, and detailed animation style known throughout the franchise and goofy humor that will have the entire family laughing, even if not all of the jokes land. In addition to introducing a memorable new ‘80s-inspired supervillain and., along with a great soundtrack packed with nostalgic ‘80s hits from Michael Jackson, Madonna, and more, the movie also continues the story of Gru and his heartfelt exploration of family.

Despicable Me 3 was released in theaters in June 2017 and grossed over $1 billion worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing movie in the franchise after Minions’ $1.1 billion box office haul. That number also made it the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2017 and the fourth-highest-grossing animated film of all time at the time. The movie also received numerous award nominations and was successful enough to spark a sequel, Despicable Me 4, which was released in 2024. A seventh franchise film, Minions 3, is set to release next year.
