Universal is looking to develop the 1990s children's sci-fi novel series Animorphs into a film, according to a report from The Tracking Board. Deborah Forte is producing the project, via Silvertongue Films, and Maradith Frenkel is overseeing the project for Universal.

The Animorphs series rivals Goosebumps in term of size – with 54 novels in the series – and peak popularity with its target audience. Created by author K.A. Applegate, the series followed a group of teens who stumble upon a crashed spaceship. The dying alien inside grants them each the power to shapeshift into animals. Dubbing themselves the Animorphs, they use their powers to fend off an invasion by aliens masquerading as humans.

The novels spawned a 1998 Nickelodeon series that starred X-Men's Shawn Ashmore. Forte served as an executive producer on that series.

Universal is said to now be searching for a writer for the project.
