At the Legendary panel at 2014 San Diego Comic-Con International, Gareth Edwards confirmed that he will be returning to direct the Godzilla sequel. Given the success of the first film, it was somewhat expected that Edwards would return.
However, the fact that Edwards had signed on to direct a Star Wars spinoff called into question his availability. Edwards will complete his Star Wars project first, before returning for Godzilla 2.
In addition to Edwards confirming his return, it was also revealed that Godzilla will soon have company. Legendary Pictures confirmed that joining Godzilla in future franchise installments will be several other classic monsters from Toho Co.
Some of the monsters specifically mentioned for the Godzilla sequel included Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah.
