Gotham: The Underworld Trailer Released

FOX has released a new Gotham trailer focusing on the titular city's criminal underworld.

In the trailer, the show's cast and crew--including Geoff Johns--discuss the power struggle between Gotham's two greatest crime families, The Falcones and the Marones. Interestingly, the show's producers mentioned how the Wayne's deaths create a power vacuum that the rival mob groups are now trying to fill. Is this meant to suggest that Bruce Wayne's parents weren't quite as noble as the city believed them to be?

The trailer also promised new threats will rise to challenge the underworld's old guard. As the established families tear each other apart, they leave themselves wide open to opportunists like Oswald Cobblepot and Fish Mooney. The former will obviously rise to become the iconic villain Penguin, while Fish's future is still anyone's guess. Perhaps a brand new supervillain for Jim Gordon is in the works. It would be interesting to see Gotham host a rogues gallery that predates Batman's, and would certainly add to the mythos.

Gotham airs Monday nights at 8:00 p.m. on FOX.
