After a very strong international opening, Iron Man 3 is setting the United States box office on fire. By all accounts, Iron Man 3 appears to be opening more like an Avengers sequel than an Iron Man sequel. Disney has indicated Iron Man 3 took in $15.6 million on its opening night. This total would include all Thursday night screenings and not just midnight screenings. Many theaters started showings as early as 9 PM on Thursday night. By comparison, the top midnight opening ever was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, which took in $43.5 million. The top midnight opening ever for a superhero movie was The Avengers, which took in $18.7 million. Considering that school is still going on in most areas, the $15.6 million for late night airings on a Thursday is very impressive. It's a good indication that Iron Man 3 should have an opening weekend close to the record-breaking Avengers opening weekend, as the film should play strong to families.
