Mad Max: Fury Road is tracking for a $40 million opening weekend, according to industry analysts.

Max is facing stiff competition from Pitch Perfect 2, which is poised to debut at equal numbers. Add to that the restrictive R rating and the fact that Avengers: Age of Ultron is still poaching much of the film's key demographic, and you can see this weekend as a uphill battle.

Warner Bros. is looking to make back the $150 million it put into the film's budget. The Mad Max sequel had been in some form of development hell for decades before finally beginning production in 2012.

While reviews are still officially embargoed, chatter around the net sounds positive. If WB gets lucky, the visually stunning film could cause a buzz with its Thursday night showings and build into a bigger than expected opening weekend. The studio has plans for up to three more Mad Max films, but a mediocre or poor performance at the box office could waylay them.

Mad Max: Fury Road returns writer/director/creator George Miller to Wasteland, with stars Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, and Nicholas Hoult along for the ride. The film opens May 15.
