It looks like Professor Layton is about to get a major makeover; Well, at least, the video game series will through an upcoming spin-off. Level-5 first teased the next Layton game would be deviating from its main series' previous installments, and a teaser photo from CEO Akihiro Hino told fans little about the project's development. But, now, a new trademark filed by the company has given fans insight into the upcoming game.

Level-5 has filed to trademark 'Lady Layton,' seemingly confirming the new game will center on a female version of the beloved professor. While the character could be a female counterpart or gender-bent mirror, fans are interested to see how the newest title fits in with Professor Layton's previous installments.

Fans had speculated that the upcoming game would focus on a female lead given Hino's teaser photo. The CEO posted a photo online of art depicting a slender woman dressed sharply in a suit. Her long hair covers part of her face, but the lady's exposed eye clearly looks calculating. Following Hino's confirmation that the Layton title would not focus on either Layton or his son, Alfendi, fans were left to believe Level-5 would be creating a new character to debut.

For now, fans can only wait for Level-5 to confirm this news at an event scheduled for July 27th. The company-wide event will likely provide an official title, release date, and synopsis for the upcoming Layton title. Fans, however, are still just excited to learn that a female lead will be coming to the main series.
