Wolverine's First Appearance

The original art for the page that introduced the world to Wolverine for the very first time is going to be auctioned off later this year. The page is the original artwork for the very last page of The Incredible Hulk #180, by Herb Trimpe and Jack Abel, and shows Wolverine leaping into battle with the Hulk and Wendigo (though the battle wouldn't actually take place until issue #181). The art has been privately owned by a fan for over 30 years, but will be auctioned off in Dallas, TX later this year by Heritage Auctions. The bar for selling comic art has been set high, with the most expensive piece, the cover to Amazing Spider-Man #328 drawn by Todd McFarlane, selling for $675,250 in 2012. In 2013, the cover to the second issue of The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller sold for $478,000. Trimpe isn't nearly as popular as those artists, but you can probably count more popular characters than Wolverine on one hand, so it will be interesting to see what the final price tag on this piece of art ends up being.
