The episode opens with Jughead, writing his novel. He talks about the emotion of fear and how it effects everyone's lives.
Two young children are in a dark bedroom, one sitting on the bed while the other one sleeps. The sleeping child wakes up - it's Betty, asking if Polly will stay in her room with her until she falls back asleep. Polly says that Alice won't let her, but she leaves the highlight on and leaves.
In the present day, Betty sits on her bed, journaling. Alice walks in. Betty mentions that she invited Jughead to come over for breakfast, and Alice is unamused.
The three sit at the breakfast table. Alice suggests that Jughead is enabling Betty to grow obsessed with Jason's murder, and Betty reassures that she was actually the one who convinced Jughead. They sit in awkward silence, before Jughead asks to be excused to the bathroom. Alice leads him to it, and Betty goes through Alice's purse in the meantime. She finds a checkbook full of information and takes pictures of it.
Archie is in his room, looking through a box of his old toys. He finds a scary wolf mask and tosses it aside. He grabs a guitar strap and stands in front of the mirror with his guitar.
Suddenly, Archie is in auditions for the school variety show. Kevin, who is running the auditions, asks what Archie is going to sing. He says that it'll be an original song, and he is teased by Reggie and several other football players in the room. Archie suddenly sees the team all wearing wolf masks, but blinks and finds everything back to normal. He gets too nervous to perform his audition and leaves.
Outside in the hallway, Archie asks Valerie about his stage fright. He says that he wasn't expecting to feel it, particularly because he doesn't get nervous when he's playing football in front of a packed crowd. Archie suggests that he might do better with a team performing with him, and he asks Valerie to do a duet with him. She says she wouldn't be able to, because it would mean betraying the rest of the Pussycats.
Betty looks at the pictures on her phone of Alice's checkbook. She finds checks written out to The Sisters of Quiet Mercy, which she and Jughead discover is Polly's group home.
At lunch, Betty questions why her parents are preventing her from seeing Polly. Archie asks if he can help Betty and Jughead when they go to Polly's group home, but Jughead says its less conspicuous if the two of them go alone. Betty asks if Archie needs to practice for the variety show, and he initially says no.
Veronica and Kevin walk up to the table, and Veronica reveals that she convinced Kevin to let Archie play in the variety show. Archie worries that he still will be nervous onstage, and Veronica offers to partner up with him. He accepts.
The Pussycats practice in rehearsal. Josie and Valerie get into an argument about a song. Valerie suggests that Josie is taking the school performance too seriously, but Josie disagrees. Valerie says that she doesn't have to deal with attitude when she's practicing with Archie. Josie gets offended and tells Valerie she needs to pick one group over the other. Valerie quits the Pussycats and leaves.
Hermione works the books on her first day at Fred's construction company. Fred walks in, and she reveals to him that he only has enough money to pay his employees for a few months. Fred explains that he doesn't want to fire his employees, especially because the last time he fired an employee - Jughead's dad - it ended badly.
Hermione asks if keeping his employees happy in the short term is worth ruining his company, and Fred reveals that he's hoping that if his company got the construction job at the lot where the old drive-in was, it would put him in a better place financially.
He says that because he doesn't know who the buyer is, he's going to try to convince Mayor McCoy - who's handling the deal - over dinner. He asks Hermione to help with the dinner, and she invites him to host it at her place. She accidentally touches his chest, and the pair look at each other.
Veronica walks up to Andrews Construction with a plant for her mom. She stops when she looks through the trailer window and sees Hermione and Fred making out.
Archie plays his guitar in his room. Fred comes in and reveals that he bought tickets for all of his employees to come see Archie at the variety show. He then explains that he and Hermione are going to go together, but is hesitant to explain why. Archie says he understands, and is totally okay with the two of them being in a relationship.
Josie complains to her mom, Sierra, about Valerie quitting the Pussycats. Mayor McCoy suggests that Josie use this opportunity to find a new sound for the Pussycats, especially because doing so would please Josie's musician father, who is skipping an important jazz festival to be at the performance.
Hermione gets home to Veronica, who asks if Hermione and Hiram will separate now that she's with Fred. Hermione reassures her that this was the first time the two had hooked up, but Veronica still worries about what will happen once Hiram is out of jail. Hermione says that she's unsure, and asks Veronica what she can do to help her process this. Veronica says that there's nothing that could work.
Archie and Valerie rehearse in the student lounge. Veronica walks in, and learns that Valerie quit the Pussycats and will now be singing with Archie. Veronica gets offended, and reveals that she knows that Fred and Hermione are together. Archie and Veronica get in an argument, and she leaves.
Veronica barges in on Josie and Melody and offers to join the group. The two smile.
Veronica puts on a pair of cat ears and joins the group down the hallway. The other students in the hallway take notice, particularly Valerie and Archie.
Betty and Jughead arrive at Sisters of Quiet Mercy. Betty is led past Polly's room and into the home's garden, where Polly spends her quiet time. She approaches Polly and the pair hug. Betty steps away and realizes that Polly is pregnant - with Jason's baby.
Betty apologizes for not coming to visit sooner. The girls discover that their parents told each daughter a completely different set of lies to prevent them from visiting each other. Polly explains that their parents hated seeing her and Jason together, and that the Blossoms actually made Jason break up with her.
She reveals that, after telling Jason she was pregnant, the pair had made plans to run away together on July 4th. On that day, she packed her bags to meet him, but was apprehended by her parents and taken away to the group home. Polly insists that Betty can break her out of the group home and get her in contact with Jason, but Betty ultimately reveals that Jason is dead. Polly starts crying, and the headmistress appears, asking Betty to leave Polly and come with her.
The Pussycats practice, but get distracted by Veronica texting. Veronica and Josie argue about each other's fathers, since Josie is taking this performance so seriously because of her dad. Veronica explains what happened to her father, and Josie apologizes.
Archie and Valerie rehearse in Archie's garage. Valerie reveals that this performance is a big risk for her too, and shares the story of how the Pussycats first met.
Betty stands in the headmistress' office. She attempts to call Jughead but her phone doesn't receive a signal. Alice barges into the office and takes Betty away. They run into Polly in the hallway, and she starts screaming at Alice for hiding the truth about Jason. Alice assures that it's for her own good, and Polly disagrees. Polly gets dragged away by nurses, but Betty runs over and hugs her, promising that she'll work to get Polly out of the group home. Polly is pulled down the hallway, distraught.
The Andrews and McCoy families sit at dinner in Hermione's apartment. They discuss music, and Josie's dad, Miles, learns that Veronica is now a member of the band. Fred assures that this drama between the kids is all in good fun, but Miles argues against it. The dinner turns awkward before Fred and Hermione decide to start their presentation.
Betty sits in her room, discussing her visit with Polly with her parents. Hal asks if Betty found what she was looking for in going there, and she says that she didn't. Betty explains that her parents' hatred for the Blossoms is motive for Hal to have stolen Keller's evidence the night of the drive-in. Hal asks why Betty would accuse him of this, and she asks if he killed Jason. Alice begins to laugh, saying that its outrageous to suggest that, but that she wishes she or Hal had killed Jason. She says that Betty is starting to sound crazy just like Polly, and Betty gets offended by that. Hal questions if Betty really believed Polly's story, and she says she does, and doesn't believe her parents. Alice says that doesn't matter because they're her parents, and they storm out of her room. Betty begins to cry.
Fred and Hermione finish their presentation for the McCoys and Archie. Miles accuses Fred of being a capitalist pig, but Sierra disagrees and says that she wishes she could award Fred the contract. She says that the buyer is already working on another bid, and that it would take two shareholder signatures to stop the process.
Josie and Veronica sit at Pop's, Josie complaining about her father's expectations for her. Veronica shares what happened between Hermione and Fred, and says that she'd hoped that things in her family would get back to normal once Hiram got out of jail. Josie suggests that Veronica really listen to Hermione's side of the story.
Archie and Fred sit in Archie's room. Archie asks if Fred would be mad if Archie bombed the variety show, and Fred reassures that he will always be proud of Archie no matter what.
Hermione asks Veronica for help with signing the Lodges' property over to Fred. Veronica asks why she would need to do that, and Hermione reveals that they made Veronica a legal officer of Lodge Industries after Hiram's arrest. Veronica asks if Hermione and Fred will stop being romantically involved if she agrees to sign the contract, and Hermione says no. Veronica says that she doesn't want any part in the business deal and storms out. Hermione goes over to the table and grabs a pen, forging Veronica's signature on the documents.
Archie walks in on Valerie playing the keyboard in the music room. He asks for them to drop their duet out of the variety show, and says that he doesn't want to distract Valerie from her true calling as a Pussycat. He also tells Valerie that Josie's dad is in town, which explains why Josie was so worried about the performance. Valerie asks Archie what he's going to do in the variety show, and he reveals he will sing by himself.
Betty sits at her vanity, only to be distracted by Jughead tapping at her window. It turns out that he put a ladder up the side of her house. Betty lets him in through the window, and begins to tell him about her parents being so crazy. She says that she's starting to question her own sanity, after the conflicting things her parents and Polly told her. Jughead comforts her, and reassures that they don't have to be exactly like their parents. Jughead starts to say something else, but loses his train of thought and kisses Betty instead. Betty breaks the kiss and starts talking about the car that was part of Polly's escape plan.
The variety show begins, with Kevin as the emcee in front of a packed crowd.
Valerie asks Josie why she didn't tell her that her dad was in town, as it would've made a difference in their fight. She reveals that she isn't singing with Archie, and asks to rejoin the group, as long as she gets a chance to sing more often. Josie agrees and tells Valerie to get changed for the performance. The pair hug.
The Pussycats sing their performance. Archie watches from the wings and smiles.
Betty and Jughead roam through the forest. They pass the maple syrup sign and find the abandoned car that Polly was talking about. Inside it is Jason's letterman jacket and a bunch of drugs. They take pictures of the evidence, and say that they need to tell Sheriff Keller about it, and then break Polly out of the group home. Someone in a second car watches the pair nearby.
Back at the variety show, Miles grows frustrated with Pussycats' performance, and gets up and leaves. Josie grows distraught, and finishes the performance almost in tears. She and the rest of the band walk offstage.
Archie congratulates Valerie on her performance. She thanks him, and reassures that his performance will go well. She walks away and Archie gets noticeably nervous.
Veronica sees Archie and walks over to him, and explains that she took her anger out on Archie after what happened with their parents. The two reconcile, and Veronica offers to sing with Archie. He says no, that this is something he needs to do alone. Veronica suggests that Archie focus on someone in the audience who makes him feel safe if he gets nervous. Archie is called onstage.
Archie gets ready to begin his song, but is heckled again by Reggie. Again, he briefly sees the football team in wolf masks, but he focuses on his dad in the audience and begins singing. Veronica and the Pussycats watch on, as do Hermione and Fred.
Betty and Jughead run into the school and find Sheriff Keller. They show him pictures of the car, and reveal to him that Jason was planning to run away with Polly. He asks them to lead him to the car, and they walk down the hallway. Betty notices that Archie's song is playing through the loudspeaker in the hallway, and takes a moment to listen to it.
Archie finishes his performance and receives a standing ovation from the crowd. He smiles.
Archie walks through the hallway, where he is congratulated by the football team. Valerie walks up to him, and the pair hug. They back away from the hug and then kiss.
Veronica notices Fred and Hermione in the hallway. Fred reveals that his bid was approved, and Veronica realizes that her mom forged her signature. She politely congratulates him before turning around and walking away.
Jughead's narration talks again about different types of fear.
Josie stands in the girls bathroom in tears. Sierra comes up to her and holds her.
Sheriff Keller pulls up to the location of the abandoned car, only to find it on fire.
Betty and Jughead run through the group home to Polly's room. They find the window broken out. Polly has escaped.
