When The Flash heads to Supergirl, all the serious problems the two of them are dealing with on their own - supervillains like Zoom and exposed allies from Mars - will be put on hold, says executive producer Andrew Kreisberg.
"Barry and Kara take a little bit of a leave of their problems for a week to engage in the kind of hilarious high-stakes high jinks that ensue when two superheroes wind up in the same universe," he told EW during a set visit. He, along with the actors, promised their quick to trust each other, because the pair are unique in their heroic world.
"What's so wonderful about these two characters in particular is that they're so joyful and happy to be heroes. There's this mutual understanding, respect, and excitement that they found each other," Melissa Benoist, Supergirl star said.
The crossover also has a lasting effect. Just as Oliver Queen helped mentor The Flash at the start of his career, now Barry takes the role of leadership.
"He teachers her quite a bit about what it means to be a hero," Benoist said, "what kind of hero she wants to be, and even personally about love, friendship, and being true to who you are." It works both ways, too, as Barry returns to his world with "new confidence and happiness because of this new friend that's out there," Gustin added.
Of course, they'll still be fighting someone, including Livewire and Silver Banshee, when Cat Grant is in trouble. The characters are uniquely suited to The Flash's strengths and weaknesses, Kreisberg tells fans.
The Flash comes to Supergirl Monday, March 28, and it sounds like it will be glorious.
