Supergirl flies to the CW tonight, making its second season debut on the new station after a season on CBS. While it's making the move, it doesn't look like much will change on the show - aside from a surprising addition, of course. Yes, Supergirl's cousin Superman is making his debut on the season premiere, flying into action alongside her - but in an atypical supporting role.

"I wasn't worried about it, to be honest," star Melissa Benoist told reporters during a conference call about Superman's first appearance. "I thought it was the natural progression of our story. He's her only living family member and I think that's kind of a necessary relationship to explore, for both characters.

"It really rewarded us as a cast, I believe, because you not only get to see how amazing the relationship between Clark and Kara is, or should I say, Kal-El and Kara, but you see how he ... He has relationships with everyone on the show. He has history with a lot of them and some of them he meets for the first time and it's hilarious, like Winn. I think it's only going to reap benefits and Tyler Hoechlin is the man to do it. He's perfect in the role, I think."

The actress was glad she had a season to better explore her own character before bringing him into the picture. Benoist told ComicBook.com that she's "still learning a lot about [Supergirl], because last season we spent a lot of time with her just trying to figure out how to be a hero in the first place and where she kind of stood on that."

In season one, Benoist "discovered her fortitude," saying that while she knew ahead of time that "she's kryptonian and the Girl of Steel," she is "astonished" by Kara Zor-El's "strength of character."

But the team-up with Superman is something special, and her crossover with The Flash during season one prepared her for that.

"I think whenever you're around someone else, when you're with someone else in another superhero suit, it always feels ridiculously awesome. I felt that way with Grant [Gustin, star of The Flash], and definitely with Tyler, seeing the two glyphs together, it felt familial, it did.

"It felt pretty amazing. It felt like, oh man, there's not a lot of people who get to do this. That's pretty special. What these characters represent is so cool. We were like giddy kids. Super excited about it. Some days it does feel like just another day at the office, when you're in the Supergirl suit for four days in a row in the DEO, but outside and flying with Superman, that stuff's cool."

Supergirl, guest starring Tyler Hoechlin as Superman, debuts its second season tonight at 8 p.m. on The CW.
