Zenescope's popular Grimm Fairy Tales comic books, which feature edgy, violent and sexy versions of popular fables, will be released online as an animated series after the project met its $175,000 funding goal today via popular crowdsourcing site Kickstarter. Kickstarter, which began as a way to give amateurs a leg up, has become an increasingly popular option for even seasoned professionals in the media to get their projects funded. Comic book creators like Paul Jenkins and Jimmy Palmiotti, in addition to documentary filmmaker Greg Palast and even the charity Reading With Pictures have are currently funding projects through the site. Helmed by Jon Schnepp of Venture Brothers fame, the series will begin with just the pilot, at an estimated cost of $175,000, with any additional money collected by the Kickstarter or generated through sales of the pilot going toward future episodes. It's a similar model to what Jhonen Vasquez recently suggested he might do with Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. The animation will be handled by Titmouse Animation Studios, which has done a lot of work for Schnepp before on Adult Swim. Fans who want to own a copy of the animated series, or see far more video content than just the trailer seen below, can do so for the next day or so at Zenescope's Kickstarter site.
