First, there was The Mighty Ducks. Then, we had The Sandlot. In hopes of continuing the trend of sports movies starring little kids, Little Giants came out, featuring the clever twist that it would focus on football instead of hockey or baseball. The film didn’t gain quite as much traction as the previously mentioned films, as it didn’t inspire any professional teams or have shirts sold at Target emblazoned with popular lines from it, but to many a kid who grew up in the ’90s, you repeatedly watched Little Giants on TV.

The story of two rival brothers who pit their peewee football teams against one another, the film explored themes of sibling rivalry, being the underdog, brains vs. brawn, and even hints of questioning gender roles at an early age. The film might not go down in the annals of history of greatest movies ever made, but it had plenty of memorable characters and gags that an entire generation will hold near and dear to their hearts.

In honor of last night’s Super Bowl, let’s catch up with some of the cast members are up to now!

Rick Moranis

Clearly the biggest star in the film, Moranisย had previously starred in films like Ghostbusters, Spaceballs, and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Despite his promising career, Moranis’ live-action film finale came two years later in the form of Big Bully, with his wife dying shortly after that film’s release.ย Moranisย lent his voice to a few animated films after that, but opted to devote his time towards raising his children.

Ed O’Neill

Little Giants came out right in the middle of O’Neill’sย career as the terrible TV dad on Married with Children, which ended a few years after the film came out. The actor continued to have small roles in a variety of movies and TV shows, but it was his casting in Modern Family that returned him to fame and fortune, with the sitcom being one of the most watched and most celebrated sitcoms on TV today.

Shawna Waldron

As the Giants’ powerhouse player, Becky “Icebox” O’Sheaย gained her nickname as a play on William “Refrigerator” Perry, known for being the size of a refrigerator. Since calling a young girl “Refrigerator” might have a negative impact on her development, she was instead called “Icebox.” Regardless of the nickname, Waldronย went on to embrace her more sultry side as an adult in Poison Ivy: The Secret Society, among a few other roles in movies and TV.

Devon Sawa

Sawa was a star player in Little Giants and was the object of Icebox’s affection. The child star had already been the family movie heartthrob, having played the real-life Casper the previous year, and he continued to trend with a slew of movies in the ’90s like Slackers, Idle Hands, and Final Destination. The actor continues to star in films and TV shows, most recently being his run on the series Nikita and reprising his role in Punk’s Dead:ย SLC Punk 2.

Alexa Vega

Vega didn’t have too much screen time as Ed O’Neill’s daughter in the film, but it’s still worth pointing her out, as it was her very first feature film role. The actress starred in the incredibly successful Spy Kids franchise when she got a little older, and when she got much older (but still relatively young, as she’s only 28 now), she also explored her sexier side in films like Machete Kills and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

Courtney Peldon

Peldon starred as O’Neill’sย other daughter in the film, rooting on her dad’s team as their cheerleader. The actress has kept quite busy over the years, taking roles in TV shows like Entourage, Boston Public, and Home Improvement. More recently, Peldonย lent some of her vocal abilities to Frozen, one of the most successful animated films of all time.

Todd Bosley

After Little Giants, Bosleyย also starred in the Robin Williams film Jack, in which he also played a scrawny, dorky kid with glasses. Bosleyย continues to be an actor, with roles in film and TV, but it’s tough to top his role in the football film and we’ll always think of him when we hear the word “intimidation.”

Sam Horrigan

Horrigan gave us one of the best movie bullies of the ’90s with Spike, the ruthless, obnoxious, and egotistical player for the film’s Cowboys team, as well as playing a bad boy in the TV movie Brink! a few years later. The actor continues to pop up in a variety of different roles, mostly on TV, and most notably reunited with his old coach Ed O’Neill when he appeared on an episode of Modern Family.

Troy Simmons

In the film, Simmons played “Hot Hands,” a character who wasn’t known for his catching skills, despite other people assuming he had them. After a handful of movies as a kid, Simmons instead decided to pursue new endeavors, most notably being the rap world. Simmons hasn’t forgotten his roots, however, and raps under the name “Hot Handz.”
