Star Trek: Discovery has been greeted by a mostly positive reaction from critics, but the reception from fans has been considerably more divided. Some have taken to the show, and others have rejected it as an unworthy successor to the series they loved.

Speaking to Den of Geek, Star Trek: Discovery stars Shazad Latif, who plays Lt. Ash Tyler, and Jason Isaacs, who plays Captain Gabriel Lorca, revealed how they each deal with negative reactions from fans. For Latif, he takes a zen approach.

"When we make it I'm enjoying what we're doing and the rest we don't have any power over," Latif says. "It's like a painting, if people don't like it then they don't like it. We can't really do much about that."

For Isaacs, even a negative reaction is just a sign of how dedicated the Star Trek fandom really is towards the franchise. He's even a little disappointed that series isn't more divisive.

"I thought it was just a sign of how unbelievably passionate and protective they were of this legacy, and before we were on the air they were reacting to a trailer or something," Isaacs says. "Micro-analysing every frame of it. Now that we're on, I'm a bit disappointed that the dissent has died down. I liked when people were outraged by things, and mostly everyone's loving it all over the world now. I seek out those people who are upset because they're always more passionate, first in line to watch it and first to hit the internet afterward. They're probably more die-hard fans than anybody else."

In the end, Isaacs is taking the long view of Star Trek history.

"Every new series that came along was hated instinctually by everybody and slowly they were won over," he says. "I think we've won them over. Quickly, which is a bit of a shame."

We've expressed a similar sentiment to the one Isaacs is references when we discussed how Star Trek: Discovery is very much a continuation of the Star Trek legacy. We've also explained why the fact that the series is on CBS All Access shouldn't prevent anyone from giving the series a shot. Then again, if Star Trek: Discovery just isn't your thing, there are plenty of alternatives.

Star Trek: Discovery will return to CBS All Access on January 7, 2018.
