Star Trek: Discovery makes its debut next month, creating another chapter in one of the most beloved science fiction franchises. As it turns out, series star Sonequa Martin-Green isn't taking that responsibility lightly.
In a recent interview with Variety, Martin-Green discussed the established legacy of Star Trek, and how Discovery is making it a priority.
"Anyone doing a new iteration of Star Trek, you have to understand how deep it is." Martin-Green explained. "You have to understand how important it is. You have to understand how much of a pillar it is to our culture. I think you need that in order to really give it the weight it deserves, and I think that — I hope that more than anything — people get the sense of how serious we take this."
As Martin-Green revealed, she also had to make the Trek legacy a personal priority, as a way of overcoming her own anxieties about working on the CBS All Access series.
"When I first got started, I had my freak-out phase. I had my almost catatonic moment where I thought, 'What is happening?'" Martin-Green revealed. "And I knew very quickly that I couldn't live there and that I couldn't create there. I owed it to the story and I owed it to the legacy to get it together. And I had to focus myself in gratitude. I had to focus myself on the passion for the vision for the story that we're doing."
Fans will have to see how Star Trek: Discovery stacks up against the previous shows when the series debuts on September 24th.
Set 10 years prior to the five-year mission of the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Discovery follows the adventures of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. The series will feature a new ship, new characters, and new missions while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers.
