When Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens hit theaters, fans left theaters asking one burning question: Who is Rey’s parents? The question has continued to haunt moviegoers, and they are still impatiently awaiting an answer that’s said to come in Star Wars: Episode VIII. Still, those fans haven’t stopped asking Daisy Ridley about her character’s mysterious past.

But, if you ask her about the whole ordeal, Ridley will say she felt like The Force Awakens explained plenty.

In a recent interview with Time Out, Ridley was asked how she felt about the ongoing mystery of Rey’s parentage. The site questioned whether she would feel good to get the secret off her chest once Episode VIII drops, but she said she already felt like The Force Awakens already held an answer.
“I thought a lot was answered in “The Force Awakens”,” she said. “Then after the screening I went for a drink with my agent and everyone, and we were chatting away and I realised that oh, in their minds it’s not answered at all!”
Of course, this answer might surprise many fans. Audiences have scoured every inch of The Force Awakens looking for clues about Rey and her family, but all they have come up with is possible rumors. When Ridley was asked to clarify her comment, the British actress stuck to some ambiguous answers that beg more questions than answers.
“I think curiosity is a wonderful thing,” she explained. “And I do find it quite funny that people keep asking about it. Just yesterday a guy asked to take a picture with me, and went “Is Luke your Dad”? And I was like, “chill out, you’ll see”!’ So does she think people are going to be surprised when they find out the truth? ‘I’d love to see the look on people’s faces.”
“But with answers come more questions, and there’s definitely going to be enough to keep people going for another two years!”
So far, there are two main theories that attempt to explain Rey’s parentage. The first asserts that Rey is a Skywalker since Luke’s lightsaber called out to her rather than Kylo Ren. The second also toys with the possibility that Rey is a Kenobi. When she has a trippy, Force-driven vision in The Force Awakens, Rey hears Obi-Wan tell her, “These are your first steps,” so fans wonder whether that connection hints at a familial bond.

Star Wars: Episode VIII continues the “Skywalker Saga,” as Lucasfilm calls it, making history as the first Star Wars film ever that will pick up directly where the previous one left off. The start of Episode VIII will show Rey coming up the worn out steps at the island world of Ahch-to, the legendary site of the first Jedi Temple that Luke Skywalker has placed himself under exile upon, reaching out to Luke with his (and his father’s) old lightsaber. The story will also continue the tale of the younger generation like Poe Dameron, Finn the renegade stormtrooper, Kylo Ren (aka Ben Solo, Leia and Han’s son who is trying his hardest to turn fully to the dark side), as well as show how longtime characters like Leia and Chewbacca move forward after Han’s tragic death in The Force Awakens. It hits theaters December 15, 2017, a year after Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a standalone film that takes place in the past, hits on December 16, 2016.
