Chris’ dark fate was self-inflicted. The teenager wanted to take on the apocalypse on his own, quickly ready to kill for survival regardless of the circumstances. It was a complete shift in view on the world compared to his father Travis’ perspective. Travis has always been reluctant to kill and advised his group to be more understanding of others along the way.
In a new deleted scene from Fear the Walking Dead‘s second season, Travis and Madison discuss Chris’ first kill from the the season’s first half. Chris killed an injured hostage which prompted the hostage’s turn into a walker and Chris’ devolving into a coldblooded killer.
Madison picked up on the warning signs while Travis lived in denial that his son could actually be a threat to any members of their group.
As Travis went on to learn, Chris was a major threat to those around him. However, the biggest threat was to himself. Late in the Fear’s secong season, Chris’ choice to run off with his new American friends cost him his life. When the teenager fell asleep at the wheel and crashed their pick-up truck, his leg was injured beyond apocalyptic recovery and his new friends revealed their true colors. They shot him dead in the streets before reuniting with Travis.

By the season’s end, we saw Travis undergo a complete flip as well. While the deleted scene shows a man holding onto belief in humanity, the loss of his son prompts him to brutally kill two young boys as a plot for revenge and accidentally slay another uninvolved man in his rage.
Fear the Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season is available on blu-ray on December 13.
