If you miss Sonequa Martin-Green on The Walking Dead, you’re likely not alone. The crew of the popular AMC series liked her so much, they created the character of Sasha just to have her on the show despite the actress originally auditioning for the part of Michonne.

The Walking Dead‘s casting director Sharon Bialy revealed that Martin-Green, who joined The Walking Dead in the same season as Michonne actress Danai Gurira, originally came out to play the part of the katana-wielding supporting actress. When Gurira got the part, the crew wanted to work with Martin-Green so badly, they created a character unique to television who does not exist in the comics.
“The producers fell in love with her so much they wrote her character for her,” Bialy said.
As the story goes, Martin-Green ended up playing a key role herself over more than four years on the AMC series. Martin-Green’s character became a representative of apocalyptic PTSD following the losses of her brother Tyreese and boyfriend Bob.
“You always try to think of them,” Bialy said. “[Showrunner] Glen Mazzara at the time said, ‘I’m gonna write something for her,’ and he really came through on his word.”
Martin-Green bowed out of The Walking Dead in the Season 7 finale when her character committed suicide in hopes of becoming a zombie which would bite and ultimately kill the villainous Negan. Since her work on the AMC series concluded, Martin-Green took the leading role on CBS’s upcoming Star Trek: Discovery series.
Gurira, on the other hand, continues to thrive as The Walking Dead‘s Michonne, a character which has become a hybrid of both the Michonne and Andrea characters in Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead comic following Laurie Holden’s departure from the series in its third season.
The Walking Dead‘s sibling series Fear the Walking Dead returns September 10. The Walking Dead will return for its eighth season on October 22, 2017. The Season 8 premiere will mark 100 episodes overall for the popular AMC series. For complete coverage and insider info all season long, follow @BrandonDavisBD on Twitter.
