Many people admired the way The Walking Dead approached Negan’s entrance and Glenn’s death, as they were almost word-for-word and shot-for-shot matches to the source material.

When it came to scenes like Rick’s romp through the fog, or his trippy dream sequences, there was no map for that. The filmmaking team had to rely on the storyboards that were designed for the episode in order to bring their vision to life.

Every major film and television show utilizes storyboards as a way to visualize the events of the story before they are acted out, and The Walking Dead is no different. This process is a little bit easier when trying to adapt a visual medium like comic books, but there’s more work to be done for some of the other scenes.

On Tuesday, The Walking Dead director/executive producer, Greg Nicotero, shared the storyboards from the brutal episode. The images AMC released focused on Rick’s axe chase through the fog, and his leap onto the hanging zombie.

When you look at the images side-by-side, it’s obvious that the Nicotero and his team did an extraordinary job of bringing their vision to life. Not much was sacrificed from page to screen, so these boards must have done a great job of granting vision to each member of the production team.
