Why It Matters

It’s been an intriguing journey to this fight becoming a reality, and part of making that happen was Crawford moving up two weight divisions just to challenge Alvarez. That does put Crawford at a potential disadvantage, but even if Crawford still gives some size and power to Alvarez, he is still one of the most talented fighters in the world. If Crawford is able to take down Alvarez even with those hurdles, it would put him into the all-time discussion and would keep his impressive 41-match undefeated streak intact.
Alvarez, on the other hand, looks to retain his Championship, but perhaps more important is the cementing of his legacy. If Alvarez can take down one of the best in the world in Crawford, it would further establish Alvarez as an all-time great, if not the greatest Mexican boxer ever. Moreover, many have been wanting Alvarez to take on an opponent of Crawford’s caliber for years, and fans have been critical of past opponents. If he could not only take on this fight but win it, it would certainly help in that regard and quiet the critics while also giving him an unquestionably landmark win on the resume.
There’s also substantial money on the line for both stars, though Crawford is rumored to be making around $10 million for the fight while Alvarez is rumored to be in the $100 million realm. A win from Crawford would probably launch him into another financial tier for future fights, though a loss by Alvarez might cause his next fight to take a hit.
The main card and main event will kick off later tonight on Netflix.
