Across seven seasons, animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars finally gave fans a chance to see how the infamous galactic conflict played out on screen. Filling in key gaps between Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, The Clone Wars followed iconic characters like Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi as they fought to protect the Republic. Seeing characters from the films was exciting, but the TV show also introduced new faces who quickly became fan favorites. Chief among the additions was lovable pirate Hondo Ohnaka, who had a recurring role and has since appeared in a variety of other projects. And it sounds like there’s more to his story.

In an interview with The Direct, Hondo’s voice actor Jim Cummings addressed the possibility of returning to the Star Wars franchise. “I think you’re gonna have to stay tuned, because Hondo is not done yet,” he said. “He’s one of my favorites, because he’s a lovable rogue. You could probably actually trust him… He looks out for Ezra, and he looks out for the younglings, as they call them, and he won’t do anything to harm anybody. But I wouldn’t want to play cards with him.”
Could Hondo Return in Star Wars: Ahsoka Season 2?

Looking at the list of upcoming Star Wars projects, one spot where Hondo could potentially show up is Star Wars: Ahsoka Season 2, which started filming earlier this year. The pirate has a fascinating history with several characters who have appeared on Ahsoka. Of course, that includes the titular heroine, who crossed paths with Hondo when she was a Padawan during the Clone Wars. Though Hondo initially caught Ahsoka and a group of younglings, they all later worked together to escape General Grievous. Hondo is also very familiar with Ezra Bridger, as the two had multiple interactions on Star Wars Rebels.
It would be fun to see Hondo make the jump to live-action, encountering Ezra again at a very different point in their lives. Through their various ups and downs, the two had a strong dynamic on Rebels; though there were times where Hondo’s questionable morals got in the way, he considered Ezra a friend and he helped the Rebels free Lothal from the Empire. The two could work alongside each other again, as Ezra will surely want to do something to help bring Ahsoka and Sabine back from Peridea. Depending on how cooperative the New Republic is with such a rescue mission, Ezra might be forced to lean on the aid of an old pirate who would relish the opportunity to travel to a new galaxy. Hondo would probably like to add to his legacy by stealing the Eye of Sion.
If there isn’t room for Hondo in Ahsoka (which will have a lot on its plate to balance), it would seem like a missed opportunity if the character didn’t have a role in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. The animated series, which arrives on Disney+ next year, chronicles Maul’s time in the galactic criminal underground, building his own empire after the Clone Wars. It stands reason to believe Maul would cross paths with a variety of unsavory characters like pirates. Shadow Lord could follow up on Maul’s encounters with Hondo and crew during The Clone Wars.
Regardless of where Hondo shows up next, it’s encouraging to hear Cummings tease some kind of return for the character. Scoundrels are a key part of any Star Wars story, fleshing out the galaxy with some ambiguous personalities who aren’t always invested in the struggle between good vs. evil. Hondo in particular is one of the best examples of this trope, winning fans over with his enthusiastic nature. Whether it’s making his long overdue live-action debut or a comeback in the animation realm, viewers will be happy to see more of him.
