The Pokemon franchise's core games have adhered to a familiar formula for much of its 20 year history. Player gets Starter Pokemon, player captures more Pokemon, player collects Gym Badges, player stops vaguely evil organization, player becomes Champion. It's a formula that has served the franchise well, but has drawn complaints from older fans who forget that Pokemon is a game designed for 10 year olds. However, a new fan-made game, Pokemon Apex, hopes to split the difference between Pokemon's universal appeal and gamers looking for a more mature RPG.

Pokemon Apex's describes itself as a "refreshingly adult take on the Pokémon universe, grounded in reality and full of real world problems, in which you play a young boy who finds himself able to travel to a strange world full of powerful demons called Pokémon." In addition to swearing and some adult themes (like death), Apex requires actual strategy to progress through the game. Players can't just spam through the game using one overleveled Pokemon, but will need to make careful choices about the Pokemon on their team. In addition, the game adheres to a more traditional RPG style, with multiple storylines and sidequests to choose from.

Like most fanmade games, Apex is still in development and periodically releases new updates with new areas to explore. While Pokemon Apex isn't the first fanmade Pokemon game, it's certainly an intriguing one and is well worth checking out. Apex is available to download for Windows OS computers here.
