According to the New York Daily News, Walt Disney Studios and Lucasfilm's upcoming standalone film based on a young Han Solo — when he was more of a scoundrel than a hero — is just the first of a planned trilogy.

According to their source, when Alden Ehrenreich, the 26-year-old actor that landed the role made famous by Harrison Ford (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), was chosen to be the future captain of the Millennium Falcon, Disney and Lucasfilm had him sign a three-picture deal, planning a trilogy well in advance.

"There is a real sense of excitement around the Han Solo movie and its potential," their insider said. "Given that Han's early adventures do not need to be tied to the Empire, it leaves story lines open with the opportunity to really give fans something different. They can explore new galaxies and crazy creatures and bring in a wide array of new characters.

"They feel that his character has the right potential to become a central figure in several movies. They're keeping things under wraps at the moment, but the deal is that he has signed for at least three movies."

The Han Solo standalone film will star Alden Ehrenreich in the title role and is being directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street). The screenplay was written by Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back, The Force Awakens) and his son Jon.

Han Solo: A Star Wars Story will be released on May 25, 2018.
