Starbreeze’s recently announced livestream took place earlier today, and while there were very few surprise announcements, we did manage to get a sneak peek at one of the company’s most wanted projects – its adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead, being made in conjunction with Skybound. (You can see the original teaser trailer above.)

Although no actual game footage was shown, the team revealed some concept art from the forthcoming project, which will be a co-op based action/shooter. Considering it’s coming from the developers at Overkill – the same team behind the fantastic PayDay games – this shouldn’t be too big a surprise.

Thus far, it’s too early to tell how the story will shape up, but the game definitely looks to be taking ideas from the comic book and framing them into an original story, involving soldiers that are doing whatever it takes to survive against an onslaught of the living dead.

The game was announced some time ago, but Starbreeze recently confirmed a delay indicating that would not be arriving until late 2018. When asked for the reasoning behind the delay, the publisher noted that the delay would “allow the studio more time to expand on its original vision for the project.” On the bright side, it certainly won’t be a rush job like Activision’s The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct ended up being, and that’ll be an experience that many fans will be thankful for.

We’ve included an attached gallery of the first concept art for the game. As you can see from the image above, Overkill is sparing no expense at bringing the comic book’s haunting world to life, with zombies capable of popping out of nowhere, and survivors fighting to stay in one piece. We have yet to see this game in motion, but early images do look quite promising.

Overkill’s The Walking Dead is slated to arrive in late 2018 for unspecified consoles (probably Xbox One and PlayStation 4) and PC.

A Dangerous World

This looks like a very small glimpse of the world you’ll be making your way through in The Walking Dead. Lots of room to run around, it appears, but just remember that you’ll have zombies close behind.

Armed and Ready

This screenshot indicates that one of the female soldiers in the game is more than ready for battle. And look at that potential zombie hand. *shudder*

A Quick Glimpse At A Character

Here’s a quick image of one of the characters that’s likely to appear in the game. It’s unknown if this protagonist is playable or not, but he sure looks angry. Zombies can make a person that way.

A Different Look

Finally, here’s another image of that same character. This looks to be a “before” like photo, probably before he ended up getting attacked by zombies and suiting up in military gear. As you can see, Overkill is putting a lot of work into the game’s engine.
