This past weekend, X-Men fans said farewell to a beloved era when Logan hit theaters. The critically acclaimed superhero flick roared into theaters with a restricted rating, and it also bid goodbye to Hugh Jackman’s take on the Wolverine. Both Jackman and Patrick Stewart bowed out of the on-going franchise with the latest film, prompting many to wonder where Wolverine will appear next. After more than a decade, the role is vacant thanks to Jackman’s leave, and fans aren’t quite sure how to cope.
However, when the time comes for the position to be filled, it seems like Jackman will have some part in that conversation.
Recently, Deadline spoke with one of the producers of the X-Men Cinematic Universe. It was there that Simon Kinberg stressed no one has even thought of replacing Jackman at this point. But, when they do, the Hollywood star will be roped in when it comes to casting.
“We haven’t even thought of the next iteration of Wolverine,” Kinberg explained. “For all of us, we were keeping our fingers crossed that the audiences would respond to ‘Logan’ the way they have. I can’t visualize in my head another Wolverine, but — if that day ever comes — we would talk to Hugh [Jackman] about it.”
Of course, Jackman has already come to terms with his X-Men leave. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor said he understood that Wolverine’s on-screen legacy would outlive his tenure with the mutant.
“The character will go on,” he explained. “Someone else will play it, for sure.”
Jackman stressed he was at peace with the departure. For the actor, he is okay with another actor picking up his legacy. Well, mostly. According to him, he would be fine with the transferal “unless Daniel Day-Lewis plays him and wins the Oscar — then I might have a little problem.”

Logan takes place in the year 2029, where mutant births have become extremely rare. The defenders of mutant kind, the X-Men, are long gone, and the only remains of them are an old and struggling Charles Xavier and a weary Logan. Logan's vaunted healing factor has slowed, and at times doesn't seem to work at all. When a young mutant needs his help, Logan has to unsheathe his claws once more. His job isn't over yet.
Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice). James Mangold is directing and helped on the screenplay along with Scott Frank and Michael Green.
Logan hits theaters on March 3, 2017.
