Star Wars: The Force Awakens Passes Iron Man 3 at International Box Office

In addition to yesterday's record, establishing Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the highest-grossing film at the domestic box office (besting Avatar) with a final of $6.2 million on Wednesday bringing the total to $764.4 million, The Force Awakens continued to climb the international charts, as well.

Overseas, the film took in $13 million on Wednesday for a new total in foreign markets of $812.2 million (worldwide total now at $1.576 billion). That new international number puts it in the 11th highest-grossing foreign territory spot on the chart, passing Skyfall, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Iron Man 3 in one day. The movie became, then, Disney's fourth-highest grossing international film, currently behind Frozen, The Avengers, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. It should break into the top ten on the international chart Thursday, and should pass at least Frozen and possibly also Avengers by the end of the weekend. The film opens in China on Saturday, January 9, finally making its debut in the world's second largest movie market.

Of course in the worldwide, combined gross, at $1.576 billion, the film continues to inch closer to Jurassic World for the #3 spot on that chart, now sitting 93 million dollars shy of the mark, one it will assuredly hit by Sunday.

Early forecasts going into the weekend call for a fourth straight first place finish in the domestic box office for The Force Awakens, with an estimated $50 million that will bring the total domestic haul over $820 million. The goal to add to the record books is $50.31 million, the current fourth weekend record, held by (you guessed it) Avatar.
