The story of The Dark Tower sees a man known mostly as “The Last Gunslinger,” played by Elba, whose real name is Roland Deschain. Roland wanders the realm of Mid-World as he tries to get to The Dark Tower, a nexus of all realities, with McConaughey’s Man in Black in the way.

The seven-book Dark Tower series is a spine to nearly all of Stephen King’s written work. It crosses over directly with books like Hearts in Atlantis, Salem’s Lot, The Stand, IT, and many, many more, and indirectly with most (but not all) of his other novels and short stories. Even items and characters from Harry Potter and Marvel Comics, along with Stephen King himself cross into the novels.

No word on Winnick’s character, but curiously many of the announced characters are ones who only appeared in the later books, 5, 6, and 7, prompting speculation about how exactly the story is being adapted. The seventh and final book is the one that actually bears the title, “The Dark Tower.”
