Reinventing the superhero genre is hard to do. With so many storylines, it is almost impossible to drum up new adaptation ideas when studios take its heroes to the big screen. Wonder Woman will be the next blockbuster to have a go at the challenge when it premieres this weekend. And, now, one of the film’s stars is gently knocking an upcoming Marvel flick to illustrate Hollywood’s rote superhero issues.

In an interview with Screen Slam, Chris Pine sat down to talk about his starring role in Wonder Woman. When the actor was asked about the sheer number of superhero movies floating about, the actor said director Patty Jenkin’s unique take is what made him interested in joining the adaptation. So, naturally, Pine had to make a poke a bit of fun at Marvel Studios along the way.
“She, in particular — Patty [Jenkins] was a great reason why I wanted to be involved. I met her, I hadn’t read — there was no script. Then she told me what she wanted to do: the story, my character, and Gal’s character,” Pine started.
“I, like you [the interviewer], agree that within this genre, it’s difficult to do something new, and usually, you just see a bunch of people killing one another — in outfits and blowing up cities. Like, I know there’s a thing called Infinity War, which is like, I don’t — really, like, Infinity War? We need more war for all time?”
This is not the first time Pine has had some fun with Marvel’s extensive line-up for superhero films. When the actor hosted Saturday Night Live, he took a jab at the company’s collection of actors named Chris. The actor came on-screen to reassure fans he was not Chris Evans, Chris Pratt, or even Chris Hemsworth. No, Pine wanted his status as a DC Entertainment actor known, and fans were left rolling over his point-blank address.

Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins, from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg & Geoff Johns, story by Heinberg & Zack Snyder and Jason Fuchs, and stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis, Saïd Taghmaoui, Ewen Bremner and David Thewlis.
